Update: June 2007: Version 1.6 of Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar should have no problems at all on Vista at this point as long as your NVidia video card drivers are version 158.24 or higher.

If you have a laptop card, check the support section of your laptop manufacturer's website (Dell, hp, etc) for updated drivers.  If the driver version is not 158.24 or higher, you should contact your laptop manufacturer and ask them when updated drivers will be available. The more of you who contact them, the more incentive they have to update their drivers.  Otherwise, your only other option is to use the modified drivers from a third party site like LaptopVideo2Go, but this may void your laptop warranty so check the terms and conditions of your warranty first.

Update Mar 3 07: The 101.41 beta drivers appear to contain the fix for the issues discussed in this thread. If you are using an nVidia card with Vista, check nVidia's site for these drivers (or newer).

If you have a laptop and the manufacturer does not provide new enough drivers, try the ones here.

Update May 7 07: Version 1.6 beta 2 for Dark Avatar resolves the scrolling slowdown issue.

There is a known issue with GalCiv2 and Dark Avatar on Windows Vista and an NVidia video card. With the older version of the drivers, this could manifest as a crash or hang, or sometimes a hard lock. With the latest drivers for Vista, the game just stops repainting but can be shut down by hitting ALT+F4. It is typical of this error to see the message "Error flipping back buffer" in your debug.err file.

We are working with NVidia to resolve this issue. It may help if we send in the system information for additional systems, so if you encounter this error, please send your debug.err file to gc2bugs@stardock.com with the subject line "Vista NVidia error" or something along those lines so that I can quickly identify them and send them to my contact at NVidia. Dark Avatar and GalCiv2 have their own debug.err files, so make sure that you send the one where you got the error. Please only send in the report once.

You may also want to save your last autosave before the error so that you can test to make sure that new drivers have fixed the problem once NVidia has releases a new version, but you don't need to send in the save games at this time.

Currently, there are no known issues with ATI cards on Vista, but you may want to make sure that you have the lastest drivers anyway.

Please make sure that your debug.err file is included with any reports you send in, as SmartException is not currently attaching the debug.err file in its reports for Dark Avatar.

Update: NVidia has identified a problem in their drivers, which will be fixed in their next release.

I just had GCII:DA crash, but not during a game. This time, it was going from one campaign (In Defense of Drengi) to the next (The Hearts & Minds of Robots) and was calling up the description of the next campaign when the game shut down. Briefly, it flashed the description screen with the text all scrambled gibberish. Below is the usual debug.err log from the second attempt (I loaded up the end-game save and retried, but it crashed again). Of note is that I was able to "Continue" the campaign through the menu just fine, but any attempt to continue from the previous campaign mission crashes the game.

I have no idea why it is showing 1.5... I will investigate though.

But yesterday apparently something happened and I am able to start dark avatar and it plays fine without issues.. Let's hope it stays this way.

I don't see any reason to play galciv2 without dark avatar so that is okay then I guess.

And driver installation is okay...

I have a 7800 GTX and am running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and everything is smooth for me (see messages a few above for my debug.err log; I have a dual-display, one at 1920x1200 for gaming and the other at 1650x1080). I noticed that it's showing that you are running an older version of the game (1.5 from Jan) instead of the newer updates, so you might want to try updating the game to see if that helps. It definitely solved a slowdown issue for me.

Other than that, when you updated your video drivers, did you fully uninstall all the previous NVidia stuff first? If not, you might want to try a clean uninstall/reinstall of the driver set.

Please install 'SmartException' from the free stuff section in Stardock Central. Make sure that SE is running and start your game as normal. If the game crashes it will generate an exception report that can be emailed to gc2bugs@stardock.com.

Include with the email a description of what you were doing at the time, how to reproduce the crash if possible, a zipped save if applicable when you send an SE log to gc2bugs, and the appropriate debug.err file for DL or DA. The devs cannot help if you do not provide these details!

If SE does not automatically pop up and prompt you to send the report when the game crashes, you can find it at C:\Program Files\Stardock\SmartException (it will be the newest file with a .CRA extension).

Hey, thanks. I checked the nvidia site and there is a 6/07 update to my driver.

My fault for relying on Vista. I found a little dealie that offered to check for updates to all my drivers, and Vista said there was nothing new.

As soon as I get home to try the new driver out, I'll be naming the next class 3 planet Microsoft, trading it to the Yor, and then using tidal disruptors on it.

Yep, Windows' driver-update checker is notoriously unreliable. It's pretty much always better to go check the manufacturer's site directly.

While I may be a bit late for the party, I seem to be having similar issues. HP laptop running with a Geforce Go 7600. I've got the most recent update of Galciv as well as the most recent driver updates from HP. At a certain turn, SOMETHING happens and the system hangs. It varies game to game, so not quite sure WHAT it is. Occassionally, if you wait long enough, you'll get to the next screen, but then it stops responding and I need to alt-F4 to get out.

The freeze can be reproduced at the exact same turn again and again. I've got a save game two turns away from freeze. And just can't figure it out.

I've undid and redid the drivers
I've turned sounds on/off
I've toned down graphics to the minimum
Changed resolutions...
and everything else I could think of (as well as info on the bugs page).

I have to admit, I'm stumped. Any help out there?

Brackard,

Those drivers don't have the fix.  You need drivers that are version 158.24 or higher.  My suggestion is to e-mail HP and ask them when new drivers will be available. The more of you who e-mail them, the more incentive they have to update their drivers. In the meantime, http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ has modified drivers that should help. Before you install them, though, you should check the terms and conditions of your laptop warranty to make sure that it won't void your warranty.  Also, if you need any help with the drivers from laptopvideo2go, you will need to post on their forums.

I got constant crash on exit prior to installing the patch, crashes on AlT+Tab to Windows, as well as some more random crashes.
In about 8hrs of play once this patch was installed, there was no crash to report, only the turn button that disapeared.

It did not appear in my Windows Updates to download, maybe it will appear later.

Hi,

Due to a hardware problem on my old PC, I was forced to upgrade to Vista and I now have a problem running DA.

This evening, I went to the nvidia website, I uploaded the latest drivers (using 7.15.11.6222), my card is the GeForce 8800 GTS and my machine is an HP 4790y running 64-bit Vista.

My Da problem: Upon starting a new a game, if I decided I don't like the current system and decide to go to the main menu and start a new game, the game will crash and I will receive a message stating that that program has stop working with the following details:

Nope, that's not a memory issue. Try changing your game resolution to match your desktop resolution (1280x1024).  If you still get that error, try running in windowed mode.
