Update August 2007: If you are having memory issues on Vista, please read this Microsoft knowledgebase article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=938194

Update: June 2007: Version 1.6 of Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar should have no problems at all on Vista at this point as long as your NVidia video card drivers are version 158.24 or higher.

If you have a laptop card, check the support section of your laptop manufacturer's website (Dell, hp, etc) for updated drivers.  If the driver version is not 158.24 or higher, you should contact your laptop manufacturer and ask them when updated drivers will be available. The more of you who contact them, the more incentive they have to update their drivers.  Otherwise, your only other option is to use the modified drivers from a third party site like LaptopVideo2Go, but this may void your laptop warranty so check the terms and conditions of your warranty first.

Update Mar 3 07: The 101.41 beta drivers appear to contain the fix for the issues discussed in this thread. If you are using an nVidia card with Vista, check nVidia's site for these drivers (or newer).

If you have a laptop and the manufacturer does not provide new enough drivers, try the ones here.

Update May 7 07: Version 1.6 beta 2 for Dark Avatar resolves the scrolling slowdown issue.

There is a known issue with GalCiv2 and Dark Avatar on Windows Vista and an NVidia video card. With the older version of the drivers, this could manifest as a crash or hang, or sometimes a hard lock. With the latest drivers for Vista, the game just stops repainting but can be shut down by hitting ALT+F4. It is typical of this error to see the message "Error flipping back buffer" in your debug.err file.

We are working with NVidia to resolve this issue. It may help if we send in the system information for additional systems, so if you encounter this error, please send your debug.err file to gc2bugs@stardock.com with the subject line "Vista NVidia error" or something along those lines so that I can quickly identify them and send them to my contact at NVidia. Dark Avatar and GalCiv2 have their own debug.err files, so make sure that you send the one where you got the error. Please only send in the report once.

You may also want to save your last autosave before the error so that you can test to make sure that new drivers have fixed the problem once NVidia has releases a new version, but you don't need to send in the save games at this time.

Currently, there are no known issues with ATI cards on Vista, but you may want to make sure that you have the lastest drivers anyway.

Please make sure that your debug.err file is included with any reports you send in, as SmartException is not currently attaching the debug.err file in its reports for Dark Avatar.

Update: NVidia has identified a problem in their drivers, which will be fixed in their next release.

I am using a Geforce 8600 M in a Dell laptop. My driver is updated as of February 2008. Forceware version 174.31, driver 7.15.11.7431. I am still getting a hang-up between turns. The turn begins and never cycles.

Any thoughts on what is causing this one?

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and copy/paste the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem. The location you'll find the debug.err in varies depending on your game version:

Dread Lords, all versions:
C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2

Dark Avatar 1.5-1.6 (non-Vista):
C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2\DarkAvatar

Dark Avatar 1.6+(Windows Vista), 1.7+(non-Vista):
My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar

Twilight of the Arnor:
My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug will be erased and recreated for the new session.

T of A had been running smoothly then, when I tried to move a constructor it just crashed.
Got the Windose Vista message that it had stopped working.

Please install 'SmartException' from the free stuff section in Stardock Central. Make sure that SE is running and start your game as normal. If the game crashes it will generate an exception report that can be emailed to gc2bugs@stardock.com.

Include in/attached to the email:
+ A description of what you were doing at the time.
+ How to reproduce the crash (if possible).
+ A zipped save (if applicable).
+ The appropriate debug.err file.

The devs cannot help if you do not provide these details!

I just updated Vista with the Service Pack and now GCII won't start at all.

I get "GC2Launcher.exe has stopped working"

I uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing.

Any ideas?

Infuriating problem!!!!!!!!

I am running Vista 64 Home Prem. 4 GB Ram, Nvidia 8800 GT, Intel Core 2 quad Q9300, all drivers up to date, game version up to date. For no apparent reason, TA has stopped working. Was running like a Greyhound, I made no changes, except saved my game, and tried to start a new one, when Vista tells me the program has stopped working for unknown reasons, What the Hell!!!
on May 18, 2008
Kryo. I installed smart exception and had another crash.
When I followed the smart exception prompts, I got the message that there was no file.

Maybe it is not a game problem, but a Vista problem ?

The crashes only happen very rarely and it works fine afterwards. I can probably live with it.

If the launcher won't work, you can just find the game's actual .exe in the location you installed it to (and update eth shortcut to point at it).

If SE can't catch it (it seems to be hit and miss on Vista), there's not a lot more that can be done right now if it can't be reproduced from a save, unfortunately.

Here is my debug.err file in notepad. Your help is greatly appreciated. I can load a game and it play fines, but starting a new one, forget about it.

Looks like it's getting stuck on civ creation--did you do a clean install of TA (if you had the beta)? Also try deleting the race files from My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor.
on May 19, 2008
You totally rock dude!!! It works now!
on May 30, 2008
Umm... Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but the problem is mentioned here. What should I do to fix the Vista scrolling slowdown issue in the original GC2? The 1.6 patch is for Dark Avatar, which I'm unable to purchase (since it wasn't released in my country).
on Jun 18, 2008
Alright, I guess this is the right place.

I've been spending the WHOLE day downloading drivers, updating though stardock, everything humanly imaginable.
I don't know whether it's nVidia or you, but the game is just not working.

I updated to v1.6, or whatever the newest version is.
I downloaded new nVidia drivers 6 times.
And still, as time passes, the game video will just lock up. I can move the mouse around, I can alt+tab out of the game, the music still plays, but the video just dies.

what can I do now?
