Lead Developer, Stardock Entertainment
Some of you remember me, right?
Published on October 17, 2016 By CariElf In GalCiv III Dev Journals

Hi everyone!

For those of you who don't know me, I was the lead developer on GalCiv1, GalCiv2 and I did some of the game engine code for GalCiv3 before I went on maternity leave and decided to stay at home with my daughter. I loved staying at home with my daughter, but she's a little older now and I thought that it might be nice to be around adults again.  At the moment, I'll only be working part-time.

Currently, the plan is for me to work on low-level engine issues with memory, slow loading times, slowdown, etc. and to be the GalCiv2 expert on the team.

I've always said that GalCiv was my first baby, so I'm really happy to get a chance to work on the series again!

Yay! Welcome back Cari, glad to have you with us.

Low level engine work is a noble and necessary thing.  Don't let anyone tell you different.

I actually like the low level stuff.  Gameplay code is like frosting, but the low level stuff is like cake. (Baking is one of my hobbies.)

Great to have you back on the team!

Welcome back!

Yeah! Welcome back CariElf. Remember you very well from the GalCiv 1 and 2 days!

Remember you from the GalCiv II days! Before that, not so much internet to be had, locally. Found GalCiv I in some "assorted games" bin at a local store by absolute and pure accident. Because back then, I had to "search offline".

What's this?  Work on low level engine guts?   Surely you jest!   Nobody cares about memory leaks and slow turn times and creeping data structure corruption and glitchy saves and game crashes!!!111!   Give her some pixels to paint or something!

(ahem)

It's great to see you back on the team,  CariElf!   As someone who has quit other games in frustration over any and all of the above,  it's nice to know you'll be giving the new engine some TLC.

And yes,  I remember you from GalCiv1 and GalCiv2 days.

This is what I figure is going to happen. They are looking for a plact for Cari; because Paul has no reason to give up his position. I'm not saying he should, but oce the next big thing comes along Brad already has a lead game designer with experience. So until then Yah they need to find a spot for her. Welcome back!

Hey, CariElf. A great big welcome back. With icing.

And I already have a problem for you to dig into. My biggest complaint about many games is that they don't seem to be able to handle list scrolling in a manner consistent with word processors. For some reason they seem to think that when you click on the dark part of the scroll bar, you want the list to jump to some approximation of where the pointer is in the list, instead of -- like a word processor -- to jump to the lines just below those currently being displayed. This causes us to use all kinds of stratagems to try to get the action we want, resulting in frustration because of how imprecise the action we get is.

Can you help us with this?

I remember how well you improved the save/reload times with GC1, and have faith in you.

Is it specifically listboxes or does scrolling text have the same issue? I remember that I didn't have a lot of time to work on either before I left.

I can state that it is a problem with list boxes, but I can't answer to scrolling text. I will watch for that in the game I am currently playing. Have you any suggestion as to where I may find a long enough text box to check it out?

Hey Carielf,

Stardock, as a publisher, and Brad and yourself are some of the few entities I have any respect for in the gaming industry today that I had direct contact with years ago.  So I am very glad to see you back.

Belated welcome back!

I do remember you, which is odd because my memory is not usually very good.

Welcome back, I am glad things are good with the family

This is very belated and I don't know how I missed this thread when it was new, but welcome back, CariElf. It's good to see you around again.
