Update: June 2007: Version 1.6 of Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar should have no problems at all on Vista at this point as long as your NVidia video card drivers are version 158.24 or higher.

If you have a laptop card, check the support section of your laptop manufacturer's website (Dell, hp, etc) for updated drivers.  If the driver version is not 158.24 or higher, you should contact your laptop manufacturer and ask them when updated drivers will be available. The more of you who contact them, the more incentive they have to update their drivers.  Otherwise, your only other option is to use the modified drivers from a third party site like LaptopVideo2Go, but this may void your laptop warranty so check the terms and conditions of your warranty first.

Update Mar 3 07: The 101.41 beta drivers appear to contain the fix for the issues discussed in this thread. If you are using an nVidia card with Vista, check nVidia's site for these drivers (or newer).

If you have a laptop and the manufacturer does not provide new enough drivers, try the ones here.

Update May 7 07: Version 1.6 beta 2 for Dark Avatar resolves the scrolling slowdown issue.

There is a known issue with GalCiv2 and Dark Avatar on Windows Vista and an NVidia video card. With the older version of the drivers, this could manifest as a crash or hang, or sometimes a hard lock. With the latest drivers for Vista, the game just stops repainting but can be shut down by hitting ALT+F4. It is typical of this error to see the message "Error flipping back buffer" in your debug.err file.

We are working with NVidia to resolve this issue. It may help if we send in the system information for additional systems, so if you encounter this error, please send your debug.err file to gc2bugs@stardock.com with the subject line "Vista NVidia error" or something along those lines so that I can quickly identify them and send them to my contact at NVidia. Dark Avatar and GalCiv2 have their own debug.err files, so make sure that you send the one where you got the error. Please only send in the report once.

You may also want to save your last autosave before the error so that you can test to make sure that new drivers have fixed the problem once NVidia has releases a new version, but you don't need to send in the save games at this time.

Currently, there are no known issues with ATI cards on Vista, but you may want to make sure that you have the lastest drivers anyway.

Please make sure that your debug.err file is included with any reports you send in, as SmartException is not currently attaching the debug.err file in its reports for Dark Avatar.

Update: NVidia has identified a problem in their drivers, which will be fixed in their next release.

Yippie! This sure is the one, DA works on my laptop too now with a GeForce7300 GO.

BTW says in the releasenotes that this problem was fixed, so these are definitely the right drivers.

Yikes, I jumped the gun. I just bought a Gateway AMD 64 x2 processor 4600+ with GF6150SE on board graphics, 2 GB Ram. It Has Vista Home Premium. I still wanted better Graphics so I got a GF7900gs card installed. I finaly have everything loaded. Now I read this board. I say again Yikes!!!!. I see now I expect to see some problems. Should have waited. For anyone else out there if you are thinking of buying an off the shelf Computer: They all Have Vista installed. None out there with XP. I do not think it is a driver issue but a Vista issue. Case in point , tried to install my external DVD burner. The software that came with it was Cyberlink DVD Solutions and Nero 7.0 enhanced. Vista would not let those programs install. I will have to check and see other game boards to see if there are other issues out thier. I have a number of them. I will check and let people know.

Even with the 101.41's I'm still getting the buffer error and Dark Avatar crashing. Are there any other fixes available? Here's my debug file.

Even with the 101.41's I'm still getting the buffer error and Dark Avatar crashing. Are there any other fixes available? Here's my debug file.


While there are still some buffering errors in your debug, it wasn't the final message, so it's more likely you're experiencing the same crash issues as others are in 1.5X. In that case, please install 'SmartException' from the free stuff section in Stardock Central. Make sure that SE is running and start your game as normal. If the game crashes it will generate an exception report that can be emailed to gc2bugs@stardock.com. If SE does not automatically pop up and prompt you to send the report when the game crashes, you can find it at C:\Program Files\Stardock\SmartException (it will be the newest file with a .CRA extension).

Please include a description of what you were doing at the time, how to reproduce the crash if possible, and a zipped save if applicable when you send an SE log to gc2bugs.

That is really weird though as I installed them and checked the version number. Must have rolled them back or something. Still getting to grips with stupid Vista. Sorry for the message.

Update: The 101.41 beta drivers appear to contain the fix. If you are using an nVidia card with Vista, check nVidia's site for these drivers.



101.41 seems to be a newer version.

So why all the talk and trying of 100.6x drivers?

Just curious, is all, since I don't have Vista (thank God!).

But was it a typo, or is there really a 101.41?

There is indeed a 101.41 beta release. I added that note (after 101.41 was released) at the top of Cari's post so people coming to this thread would see it.

I think nVida did not prepare for OpenGL programs. This and several other programs work when this update is applied, all of them OpenGL based.

GalCiv2 uses Directx, not OpenGL.

ATI had Vista drivers to work for ALL Games about 2 days BEFORE Vista came out. And are working on a DX10 compatible card for CHEAPER then the 8800. Plain and simple nVidia SUCKS and ATI is awesome. ATI has what they say they are going to have BEFORE OR ON TIME.

Thanks for looking! I am trying to install the latest drivers for my GeForce Go 6150 card, but I'm running into issues.

My setup:
HP DV9000 laptop
Vista 32 bit
factory installed driver from 12/9/07


I downloaded a couple new drivers from the links above (a final version and a beta version), uninstalled the old Nvidia program via "Add/Remove Programs", and tried to install each of the new driver sets. I got this error:

"The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."

Anyone else run into this or have any suggestions?
