Lead Developer, Stardock Entertainment

Ever since GalCiv1 came out, people have commented on how personally we the developers take comments/criticism on our games. Well, yes, we do take it personally, and that's really not a bad thing. It's because we love the game. We love what we do. The GalCiv2 team is composed of workaholics, no one more so than Brad. Between our love of the game and our workaholism, we've put a lot of effort into making the game something that you want to keep playing, even years after the release. So when people start posting things like "you've ruined the game", it really is a slap in the face to us. And after having worked more hours than is really healthy for us, and then spend additional time working on second level support and reading the forums, our tempers can get a bit short. In a perfect world, people posting criticism on our forums would do so in a constructive manner rather than just posting, "OMG you've ruined the game!" To that end, I would like to thank the people who crunched numbers, sent in save games, etc..

After some discussion here at the office, we decided to put up another update to 1.8 which increases the number of habitable planets back to 1.7 levels. The code for setting the initial planet class isn't exactly the same because I decided to leave some of the tweaks Brad made to the code that picks the actual class value. This is how the code works to select the initial class of a planet:

1) It takes the value from the Number of Habitable planets spinner and uses that to calculate the Habitable Planet Factor.
2) The Habitable Planet Factor is used in a random roll to determine if the planet will be class zero.
3) If the planet is not a class zero, it does a few more random rolls to determine the non-zero class.

The part of the code that is now the same as it was in 1.7 is the code that calculates the Habitable Planet Factor, which directly impacts the number of class 0 planets. The code that is different is the code for step 3, which doesn't affect the number of non-zero planets, but the actual class values. Note that none of this code has anything to do with the planet type (toxic, heavy gravity, etc). At this time, we're not going to touch that code. I didn't even have a chance to check for other bug reports, and I won't until I get some work on Twilight of the Arnor done.

Anyway, we put this update today because we really love this game too. Just try to remember that the next time you're about to hit the submit button on that flame, ok? The less time we spend reading your flames and getting mad about them, the more time we can spend on coding.

Being a developer myself I understand how Cari feels.

So thanks again Stardock - you guys rock!

Cari and Brad please take a look at THIS thread and maybe it will bring you a smile after the weekends flaming threads!

Hi,

I'm with GalCiv from the very beginning and I bought everything since GC1. I always pre-ordered when possible. Same with SOSE. I even bought lots of stardock stuff (windows blinds, etc...) that normally I would never be interested in, because I trust Stardock. You've never betrayed that trust...

Why?

Because Stardock has the best attitude in the game industry. You make wonderfull enjoyable games. Every new update I think: "well, that's it. They can't do better than that, apart from better graphics..." Every update I'm wrong! The support you guys give is unseen in the industry. Have a question or a problem? You get an answer, most of the time on the same day. And not like with other games: "Please, reinstall and update your drivers" which you get from the other companies after weeks of anxious waiting, if you get an answer at all. As I'm have two (!) bibliotheques full of PC games, I could fill pages with games, which give no or no usefull feedback.

You listen to our questions, needs, whines, etc... and if we have interesting ideas you implement them. You absolutly have every reason to be very proud of your work and commitment.

As GalCiv is so good, and indeed is one of the only games you keep playing for years, it's also understandable that gamers are so protective and hot-headed about 'their' game. Don't let a few flamers get on your nerves. You can't do right for everybody. But you are defenitly doing ace for most of us.

Now just get outside sometimes, train a little to get some steam of. I used to live glued to my PC's for many years. A little exercise and you can conquer the world, as I finally understood. And then you go back to coding, and I go back to enjoy your wonderfull work.

Just do it!

BTW, 2 days till the beta: yeeeeehaaaaa!!!!!!

odd. i just updated to 1.8b; it looks like everything went through fine, but now 1.8a is listed as an available update. just thought i'd throw that out there.

Shut down SDC and then restart and it should have gone
on Oct 22, 2007
That happened with all the betas too. It showed the previous version as available update whenever the new beta came out. I think it goes away if you restart SDC though

okay, thanks guys. i figured it wasn't a big deal either. i've just never noticed it before.

Quick! Frame this thread! A member said a 'glitch' in a program is, and i quote, "Not a big deal"!! WOOT it had to happen eventually

I am joking in case someone was wondering

good one. though i actually don't say it often, i don't think very many of the bugs are a big deal, personally. some are annoying, for sure, and when i'm sufficiently annoyed i find something else to do. funny, that.

but most of the time, i trust that SD is on the ball and will get to it sooner or later, especially in light of the "OMG ITS UNPLAYABLE NOW!!1" crowd (the 1 was intentional).

Thanks GalCiv2 team for all the great updates and stuff! I will never have a clue what goes on under the hood of this great game but I do know that it is one of my favourite games of all time!

Thanks for the good, hard, great work. You have done more than anyone can ask for. Short of an MMO, this game has received more love than anything out there.

Maybe a global reduction of habitable planets can be made optional in the future? No doubt some of us actually found this change less devastating than the enormous disaster some vocal individuals made it sound like. Not everyone got supercomputers.

For all it is worth, the satisfied customer make very little sound. If any at all.

OMG U RUINZD TEH GME!!!!!!!

Wh0 LOvES FLaME WaRS!?!?!?!?! <:;/\^&#   >()

Ha! Just kidding. You guys are cool because you take our suggestions and error reports and use them to improve. I guess that would make Stardock a democracy then. It's tiring to see companies that ignore what people want and repackage and recycle old crap over again....and again...then again....then AGAIN...and once more to scam the die hard fans out of another dollar....and then maybe one more time.

PS: ^ Probably the most flamboyant monstrosities I'll ever slap on this forum.

Cari, will you marry me?

Neilo, I challenge you to a duel for Cari's affections.

Really Cari, I would make an excellent partner. I have many fine qualities, including:
1) The ability to kill spiders for you
2) The willingness to cheer for the Lions in your presence

I mean, what more could you ask for?

You guys Rock! i played the Game with less planets and it gave the game a little balance and it didn't crash my system. it works wonderfully with my new Geforce 7600GT,which was upgraded from a ATI Raedon 9800Pro. it took longer for other races to go to war with you and allowed you to build up forces to counter the other races. I think people were making too much DRAMA over a little detail in the game. I'M already Stoked for Twilight of the Arnor. I can't wait for the betas to come out Thursday. I know this game like the others will be money well spent. EA doesn't even come close to the level of dedication that Stardock gives to its'games. See Ya at the BETAS
